Volunteer Opportunities: Digital Media Manager and Website Developer & Designer
Roman Catholic Church in Africa (SECAM) – Volunteer Programme, Managed and Coordinated through APO Group.

Location: Remote (Africa and Europe)

Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

Time Commitment: 2 days per week, for a minimum of 6 months

Overview

The governing body of the Roman Catholic Church in Africa (SECAM) is seeking two skilled digital professionals to
support the growth, visibility, and effectiveness of its Volunteer Programme across Africa and internationally.

We are recruiting for two distinct volunteer roles:

Digital Media Manager (Social Platforms)

Website Developer & Designer

Both roles are hands‑on, execution‑focused volunteer roles, suited to professionals who are comfortable delivering clearly
defined tasks and producing practical outputs in a remote, mission‑driven environment.

Volunteers in these roles are expected to work independently, apply established brand and user experience standards, and collaborate effectively with colleagues across communications, content, and project teams. The focus is on doing the work, maintaining quality, and ensuring consistency across SECAM’s digital platforms.

Role 1: Digital Media Manager (Social Platforms)

This role focuses on digital media, social platforms, and online campaigns. The successful volunteer
will help strengthen engagement, awareness, and participation in SECAM’s work through effective use of digital channels.

Digital Media Manager Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute digital marketing and media campaigns across multiple channels (email, web, and social media).
  • Expertise in creating and maintaining institutional LinkedIn page(s) – including creation and maintenance.
  • Expertise in creating and managing institutional social media management for Facebook and other social media platforms.
  • Create engaging content and visuals that reflect SECAM’s mission and values.
  • Manage and optimise online presence, including websites and social media accounts.
  • Monitor campaign performance and analytics to assess effectiveness and identify improvements.
  • Support SEO, SEM, and social advertising strategies to increase reach and visibility.
  • Coordinate with the communications team to ensure brand consistency across platforms.
  • Research trends and emerging digital tools to enhance online engagement strategies.
  • Assist in planning and executing communication and marketing projects in collaboration with team members.

Digital Media Manager Required Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in digital marketing, social media, or related areas.
  • Strong understanding of digital analytics, online advertising, and social media tools.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (French or Portuguese are an advantage).
  • Experience with common digital tools such as Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, Mailchimp, or Canva.
  • Creative mindset, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Availability for at least 2 days per week (fully remote).

Role 2: Website Developer & Designer

This role focuses on building, maintaining, and improving SECAM’s websites. The successful volunteer will ensure the organisation’s digital platforms are visually consistent, easy to use, and technically robust.

Website Developer and Designer Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and launch websites, landing pages, and enhancements based on provided requirements.
  • Implement responsive, cross-browser compatible designs.
  • Customise CMS themes, templates, and components.
  • Translate design mockupsand supplied contentinto functional, high-quality web pages.

    Website Administration & Maintenance
  • Apply SECAM brand guidelines to ensure visualconsistency and professional design quality.
  • Ensure strong usability, accessibility, and clearvisual hierarchy.
  • Maintain reusable templates and design components.
  • Collaborate with contentowners to ensurelayouts support communication objectives.

    Performance, SEO & Accessibility
  • Implement technical SEO best practicesand page-level optimisations.
  • Optimise site speed, performance, and responsiveness.
  • Apply accessibility standards (WCAG) and usability best practices.
  • Support analytics, tracking, and performance monitoring where required.

    Collaboration & Process
  • Work closely with content creators, communications leads, and project managers.
  • Provide practical input on technical feasibility and timelines.
  • Document site structures, updates, and maintenance processes.


Website Developer and Designer Required Experience

  • 3–5 years of professional experience in website development and web design.
  • Strong working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with at least one CMS platform (e.g. WordPress, Webflow, Drupal).
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of responsive designand UX/UI principles.
  • Familiarity with hosting environments, DNS, and deployment workflows.
  • Strong communication skills in English(French or Portuguese is an advantage).

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with modern frameworks or libraries (React, Vue, etc.).
  • Basic backend knowledge (PHP, Node.js, or similar).
  • Experience with e-commerce or membership-based websites.
  • Version control experience (Git).
