The Bezos Earth Fund is offering to help United States lawmakers implement a proposal to create a public-private partnership to support efforts to manage conserved areas in Africa and other parts of the world and stop the illegal wildlife trade.
The U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act, which has been proposed in both chambers of Congress, would help prevent global biodiversity loss and decreases in wildlife population by “leveraging investments from the private and philanthropic sectors to fund as much as $2 billion for protected areas around the world, and the communities surrounding them, over the next decade,” according to a press release.
The bill has not yet been approved by Congress or signed by President Joe Biden. If enacted into law, it would create a conservation foundation with a board of directors that includes the heads of several agencies, including the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, as well as private sector donors and independent experts representing “diverse points of view.”
