The United Kingdom government sought to calm fears that the world’s “poor and hungry” are losing out after rich nations pledged billions in further aid for relief and reconstruction in Ukraine, at a London conference.
The United States, Germany, and France joined the U.K. in unveiling a total of around $2 billion for immediate humanitarian support, and to overhaul Ukraine’s energy grid, border crossings, ports, rail lines, and other critical infrastructure.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal urged world leaders on Wednesday to go much further to find $6.5 billion “for the next 12 months,” saying: “We have set an ambitious goal of securing pledges for this amount.”
