An international group of internet activists seek to mobilize USD150,000 to help provide free Internet connection in poor nations.

The Buy This Satellite campaign, an initiative of the Internet accessibility group “ahumanright.org,” aims to buy the Terrestar-1 satellite.

“The satellite is as big as a school bus,” Kosta Grammatis, a visiting researcher at MIT Media Labs was quoted by Al-Jazeera as saying. “We want to raise [USD]150,000 then we can bring in experts, finalize the business plan and start chasing after the big bucks.”

The campaign has so far raised more than USD19,000.
