Take the stress out of job hunting
“The main thing that causes us stress are the things that are out of our control.”
— Simone Anzböck, international coach and development careers expert
Looking for a new job is one of the most stressful things you’ll do in your career, especially in a sector as complex as global development. In our most recent Devex digital event, coach Simone Anzböck offered practical advice to help job seekers maintain their motivation and mental health while seeking their next development role.
One strategy she offered involves identifying the parts of a job search that you can directly impact, what you can influence, and the things you can’t do anything about:
Circle of control. This group represents the elements that you can have the most impact on, and what you should be focusing much of your attention on. These include preparing for interviews and tailoring your CVs for each application.
Circle of influence. These additional aspects you may not have direct control over, but you are able to have an impact based on the actions you take. Examples are “the way you cultivate your relationships” and how “you write your emails,” Anzböck said.
Circle of concern. “We can’t control who is going to apply to these jobs. We can’t control the job market. We can’t control how many people we’re up against,” she said, referring to things you should stop focusing on should you not land a role.
Instead, to reduce stress and feeling overwhelmed and improve our chances of securing a job “we want to focus on our circle of control [and] a bit on our circle of influence,” she said.
