As many of you are aware, the new Trump administration’s flurry of executive orders and policy reviews is having major impacts on global development professionals and their work.

Devex is reporting every day on the latest implications for those working for and with USAID and the broader effects on the development sector. I am also tracking how these changes are directly impacting the sector’s workforce through Trump’s first 100 days in office.

We are also busy reaching out to recruiters and professionals and will be reporting back in the coming weeks on how organizations and professionals are weathering these uncertain times. At the same time, we will continue bringing you the latest and best job opportunities and insider career advice to help you best position yourself in an increasingly competitive job market.

With this in mind, we will start sending you two editions of Career Hub per week from Monday, Feb. 3. Based on feedback from our recent survey, while most of you are happy with this newsletter overall, many expressed an interest in receiving more job postings, and our additional send will allow us to meet this need. So, look out for many more free job postings next Monday.

In the meantime, in this edition of Career Hub, the latest fallout from the U.S. aid freeze that development professionals need to know. Plus, insights from our recent event on getting your CV back in shape, and new job opportunities at Tetra Tech, Project HOPE, and more leading organizations.

Trump’s aid freeze: Assessing the impact

We’re tracking the impact on development staff as the new U.S. administration continues its efforts to realign government policies and priorities with Trump’s “America First” agenda. Here are a few key recent developments:

    • Confusion persists over the stop-work order for existing USAID grants and the humanitarian aid waiver that soon followed. Despite media reports that the waiver applied to the PEPFAR global health program, this has not been confirmed, and at least one INGO tells us they have yet to be told they can resume work.

    • Furloughs hit 500 contractors in the USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, or BHA. This accounts for up to 40% of the bureau’s workforce. The ones affected include those working on risk mitigation, information management, and operations.

    • The International Organization for Migration, or IOM, the Geneva-based U.N. agency, has ordered an immediate freeze to its U.S. resettlement program and is preparing the groundwork for up to 5,000 job cuts.

    • The U.S. decision to exit the World Health Organization has led to a hiring freeze and other cost-cutting measures. Staff members received an email from Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who cited the departure as making the agency’s financial situation “more acute.”

The long and short of an ideal globaldev CV

“No one ever sat down in front of ‘War and Peace,’ and said, ‘I’m not going to read this. It’s too long.’ I mean, things will get read if they’re well-written.”

    — Kathryn Harper, professional development CV writer

We recently hosted an AMA session with professional development CV writer Kathryn Harper, who fielded questions on a range of topics, from emerging trends such as the artificial intelligence role to age-old queries such as the ideal CV length.

“I think that your professional story needs to be as long as it needs to be to tell it in a compelling way, and that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be concise,” Harper said. “My CV is three pages long, and I’ve been in the working world for 20-plus years. And so far, it hasn’t stopped me from getting an interview,” she added.

+ Devex Career Account members can read more of Harper’s tips and watch the event in full.  To gain access to this and all digital events, advice guides, and full job board, sign up for a Career Account with a free 15-day trial. Around the watercooler

News and views from around global development worth knowing about.

    • USAID staff being ‘thrown away.’ USAID's teams are “being thrown away like they’re nothing,” and America’s global health infrastructure may never truly recover, says Dr. Atul Gawande, the former head of the agency’s global health programming.

    • The U.K. slashes conflict funding. At least seven NGOs have been warned to expect cuts to program funding because of an anticipated £117 million reduction, the peacebuilding organization Saferworld revealed to Devex.

    • U.S. Paris pullout ‘good’ for European firms? The EU’s development chief attacked Trump’s move to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement but argued it will be “good” for European companies that can plug the investment gap left behind.
