If you’re a global development professional aspiring to help those affected by climate change, a role with NORCAP could be what you’re looking for.
“We usually recruit candidates who have some climate-related academic background and some years’ experience with national meteorological offices or regional offices,” Lorene Kuraishi-van Haalen, NORCAP’s senior recruitment and communications adviser, tells us. However, there are also opportunities for those with other kinds of experience.
In this edition of Career Hub, I’m sharing a few insider tips on standing out as an applicant with NORCAP. And if project management is more your speed, I’m also relaying key takeaways from our chat with a lead project manager at CARE. Plus, featured job postings from the likes of USAID, Papyrus SA, and more.

Recruiter insights: NORCAP
“In light of the world struggling to reduce emissions, NORCAP has a big focus on its pool of energy experts.”
— Lorene Kuraishi-van Haalen, senior recruitment and communications adviser, NORCAPNORCAP’s recruitment is largely focused on the African continent and many of the organization’s climate experts are based in key national meteorological offices, as well as regional institutions and United Nations agencies. Here are a few other things applicants should know.
The tech advantage. Information management and data visualization are “good skills to have for climate-related jobs, even if you don't have past humanitarian experience,” Kuraishi-van Haalen says, adding that candidates with backgrounds in development “stand out even stronger" if they have technological competencies.
A focused CV. “It might be controversial to say, but a great two-pager with specific keywords matching those of the job description will stand out over a five-page CV every time,” she says. Due to the high volume of applications they receive, “the CV should always be concrete and concise.”
Transitioners welcome. While many NORCAP experts have previous development experience, “we have also recruited professionals from the private sector, for example, someone who has been involved in sustainability projects within their company and has a portfolio of different clients, giving them a unique perspective,” she says.

Soft skills for project managers
While recruiters keenly assess soft skills for a wide range of global development roles they’re filling, these abilities are truly at the heart of being a successful project manager. Tamera Jurberg, a lead project manager of the gender in emergencies team at CARE International, shares some of the most important soft skills for aspiring professionals to hone.
Emotional intelligence. Understand and empathize with the needs, priorities, challenges, and aspirations of your team members and partners, recognizing that they are individuals with unique perspectives.
Cross-cultural skills. Understand and respect cultural differences within your team and among partners. Being culturally aware and adaptable helps in building strong, effective, and inclusive collaborations.
Analytical thinking. Develop a broad understanding of situations to make strategic decisions, while encouraging team and partner participation in the decision-making process.
