Welcome to our first Monday edition of Career Hub. If you really like our Friday edition, don’t worry, that one is still coming in a few days, and this one is kind of like that one, but with way more free job leads from our board. This is something many asked for in our recent survey, and with the job market evolving in response to the Trump effect on the development sector, highlighting more current opportunities seems like a good idea anyway.
In this edition of Career Hub, I’m sharing some key insights from last Thursday’s ask-me-anything event on how to best position yourself for a more competitive development job market. Plus, check out our expanded selection of the latest and best job leads.
How to respond to an evolving job market
During our latest careers event, a panel of career experts fielded a range of questions on the 2025 job hunt, including how the recent U.S. aid freeze and other decisions from the new administration are impacting global development jobs.
Here are a few key takeaways from the discussion on how to best position yourself for what is shaping up to be a more competitive job market.
Pay attention to where the money is going. In response to frozen aid and budget cuts, “private philanthropy is going to have to step up [and] you’re going to see foundations get a lot more money and start mobilizing more funding,” says Stephanie Mansueto, development recruiter and job-hunting coach.
Don’t panic apply. “If you … apply for jobs that are in 50 different fields between different organizations, it’s going to be hard for you to develop a reasonable network,” says international coach Simone Anzböck. Take a step back and really think about what areas to focus on, and don’t prioritize applications over networking efforts.
Expand the definition of social impact. “People are asking … since this news has come out, How do I still do good in the world? How do I still make a difference?” says leadership coach Dan Freehling. He recommends expanding your search to hospitals, schools, social enterprises, and purpose-driven private businesses.
