    Africa regards democracy and good governance — with their potential to include and empower Africans in the political process — as crucial to ensuring the continent’s sustainable development because, as a regional expert explained, both are part and parcel of the African shared values.

    Once called the Dark Continent, Africa is now in a process of transition and evolution both politically and economically, Sala Ahmed, African Union senior human rights expert, told Devex Associate Editor Richard Jones in this video interview on the sidelines of the Annual Democracy Forum 2014 in Gaborone, Botswana.

    The official cited the partnership of the AU with organizations like Stockholm-based International IDEA as an example of such collaboration to promote democracy and governance across the continent.
