Paris Agreement in peril as Trump reenters White House

Trump is back, and with it, the threat of a U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and UNFCCC. Climate experts warn this could erode trust in global climate action and leave the crucial treaty scrambling for funding.

With President Donald Trump sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, many predict he will pull out of the Paris Agreement — the most significant global effort to tackle climate change in history — for the second time.

“We are expecting him to pull out of the agreement on Day 1 or Week 1,” said Adrianna Hardaway, senior policy adviser for climate at Mercy Corps.

While it takes a full year for a country to exit the agreement after announcing its intentions, experts say that Trump’s decision will impact how these discussions progress over the next year and set the groundwork for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP30, in November.
