    The top local employers in Latin America and the Caribbean

    An overview of the leading local organizations recruiting in Latin America and the Caribbean.

    This year, employment in the global development sector has seen significant shifts. Since the USAID’s stop-work order was announced on Jan. 24, Devex data suggests that there have been 3,216 global development opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean, a drop of 29% compared to the 4,549 opportunities in the equivalent period last year. Data also suggests the top recruiting employers in the region are multilateral organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, Organization of Ibero-American States and United Nations Development Programme country offices, and other notable organizations such as the Global Green Growth Institute and World Resources Institute which are not locally founded but have local presence. In this article, we will focus on the top local employers recruiting in the region and identify what common level of experience, contract durations, sectors, and job titles these employers look for. 1. Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research centers Headquarters: Texcoco, Mexico; and Lima, Peru Year founded: 1966 (Mexico) and 1971 (Peru) Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 98 CGIAR research centers in Latin America and the Caribbean aim to be hubs for collaboration and co-creation of solutions to respond to regional challenges. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, or CIMMYT, in Mexico is a nonprofit organization fostering improved quantity, quality and dependability of production systems through applied agricultural science in the global south. The International Potato Center, or CIP, in Peru is a research-for-development organization focused on delivering innovative science-based solutions to enhance access to sustainable agrifood systems in the global south. The research centers mainly recruit for entry-level opportunities and full-time contract positions. Administrative-, agricultural- and research-related positions such as administrative assistants and research assistants are the most common job titles. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Headquarters: Santiago, Chile Year founded: 1948 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 86 The U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, or ECLAC, is one of the regional commissions of the U.N. intended to coordinate and contribute to the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean. ECLAC commonly advertised mid-level opportunities, internships, and short-term contract positions. Administrative, economic and governance-related roles such as team assistants, economic affairs officers, and public information assistants are the most common job roles. Central American Bank for Economic Integration Headquarters: Tegucigalpa, Honduras Year founded: 1960 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 29 The Central American Bank for Economic Integration, or CABEI, is a multilateral development bank centered on fostering economic integration and promoting inclusive and balanced social development across the Central American region. CABEI mostly advertised entry-level opportunities and full-time contract positions. Since Jan. 24, finance specialist and procurement specialist are the most common job titles. Caribbean Development Bank Headquarters: St. Michael, Barbados Year founded: 1970 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 18 The Caribbean Development Bank, or CDB, is a regional financial institution focused on promoting economic cooperation and integration in the Caribbean region. CDB has mainly advertised senior-level opportunities and full-time contract positions since Jan. 24. Administrative and finance-related opportunities such as directors, project officers, and audit officers are the most common job roles. 5. Andean Community (Comunidad Andina) Headquarters: Lima, Peru Year founded: 1969 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 12 The Andean Community is an integration organization centered on improving the quality of life through comprehensive, balanced, and autonomous development through Andean integration. Since Jan. 24, the Andean Community has mainly recruited for entry-level opportunities and fixed-term contract positions. Administrative and governance-related roles such as administrative assistant and specialist in foreign trade are the most common job titles. Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe Headquarters: Caracas, Venezuela Year founded: 1968 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 10 Banco de Desarrollo de America Latina, or CAF, is a development bank committed to supporting and improving the quality of life in Latin America and Caribbean by promoting sustainable development and regional integration. CAF mostly promoted senior-level opportunities and short-term contract positions. Administrative, infrastructure, and urban development-related positions such as recruitment and selection executives and construction project executives are the most common job roles since Jan. 24. International Seabed Authority Headquarters: Kingston, Jamaica Year founded: 1994 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: Nine The International Seabed Authority, or ISA, is an autonomous international organization focused on ensuring the effective protection of the marine environment. ISA primarily recruits for senior-level opportunities and short-term contract positions. Legal officers and research associates related to administrative and environmental fields are the most common job roles. View all current ISA job openings on Devex. 8. Instituto Socioambiental Headquarters: São Paulo, Brazil Year founded: 1994 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: Seven Instituto Socioambiental, or the Socioenvironmental Institute, is a civil society organization centered on working alongside indigenous and extractive communities to develop solutions to protect and strengthen their communities. The institute mostly advertised mid-level opportunities, internships, and full-time contract positions. Administrative roles are the most common since Jan. 24. Integrated Office in Haiti Headquarters: Port-au-Prince, Haiti Year founded: 2019 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: Six The U.N. Integrated Office in Haiti, or BINUH, is a special political mission focused on providing advisory services and good offices to create conditions needed for sustainable development. BINUH has mainly advertised senior-level opportunities and short-term contract positions since Jan. 24. Administrative and governance-related opportunities such as administrative officer and legal officer are the most common job titles. 10. Caribbean Community Headquarters: Georgetown, Guyana Year founded: 1973 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: Four The Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, is an integration movement focused on economic integration, foreign policy coordination, human and social development and security. CARICOM mainly advertised mid-level opportunities and short-term contract positions. Since Jan. 24, opportunities related to administrative and research works are the most common job roles.
