Experts warn that toxic materials from western Ukraine’s former mines could spread and threaten the environmental and health conditions of nearby communities. The situation in Ukraine’s Kalush area is critical and requires immediate action, the final report of a joint U.N.-European Union mission says. Mining in the area made the ground unstable and vulnerable to erosion, the report says, adding that surface and ground water in Kalush is already contaminated and highly salinized.
