Rotary International has appointed its first female president after 117 years. That’s just one example from a range of job moves and executive appointments in the month of July.

Rotary is one of the largest funders of international development in the world, with 46,000 branches and 1.4 million members across more than 200 countries and areas. It is one of the leading organizations in the fight to eradicate polio. In the late 1980s, Rotary shifted from having an all-male membership following a legal ruling in the United States. More recently, the organization has championed a growth in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Jones, who is also the founder of a media company in Canada, took office on July 1. That’s just one example from a range of job moves, leadership changes, and executive appointments in the month of July. NGOs Sana Ali Mustafa has been appointed as Asylum Access’ new CEO. She joined the organization in 2020 as director of partnerships and engagement. IDEO.org, a nonprofit design studio, has named Shauna Carey as CEO. Carey has worked at the organization for nine years. ID2020, a campaign to help people prove their digital identity, has named Clive Smith as its new executive director. Katy Crosby has taken the role of senior director of U.S. policy and advocacy at Mercy Corps. She was previously on the staff of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee. Greg Garrett has started as executive director at the Access to Nutrition Initiative. He was previously the business development director at the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative. The Ford Foundation has promoted Monica Aleman to international program director for gender, racial, and ethnic justice, and José García to program director for the future of work. Will McDonald has joined GiveDirectly as senior manager for communications and press. He was previously the director of communications for U.S. Rep. Sara Jacobs from California. Dominik Stillhart has stepped down as the operations director at the International Committee of the Red Cross after 30 years with the organization. The Power of Nutrition has appointed Mark Cutifani as its new board chair and David Bull as deputy chair. Paula Shugart and Crystle Stewart have joined the Smile Train board of directors. Finance Indermit Gill has been appointed as chief economist of the World Bank Group and senior vice president for development economics. He is currently the bank’s vice president for equitable growth, finance, and institutions. Agnes Dasewicz will serve as chief operating officer at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Among other roles, she was previously the CEO at Small Enterprise Assistance Funds, which invests in local entrepreneurs in emerging markets. Jonathan Charles has left his role as the managing director of communications for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development after 12 years at the bank, moving instead into consulting work. Gerry Rice will retire from his role as director of communications at the International Monetary Fund on Dec. 1. International Alvaro Lario has been appointed as the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s next president, starting Oct. 1. He has been IFAD’s chief financial officer since 2018. Aamer Ikram, Robert Lucien Kargougou, and Won Do-yeon have joined the board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Anne Schuchat took over as chair of the board’s program and policy committee. United States Margaret Whitman was confirmed as the U.S. ambassador to Kenya, while Reuben Brigety was confirmed as the U.S. ambassador to South Africa. Nahid Bhadelia was appointed as a senior policy adviser for the global COVID-19 response at the White House. Bhadelia will be on sabbatical from Boston University. Richard Nephew was named as the State Department’s coordinator on global anti-corruption. United Kingdom Pete Vowles, the U.K. envoy to Myanmar, was expelled from the country after London downgraded its diplomatic representation to the military-ruled nation. Laurie Lee, the CEO at Care International UK, stepped down last week. He has been replaced on an interim basis by Eamon Cassidy. Research and policy Marta Foresti is moving on from her role as executive director of ODI Europe. She will continue working “in collaboration” with ODI but will now focus on the creative sectors. Sean Cairncross, the former CEO at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, has joined the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue as a senior visiting fellow. Jennifer Denno Cissé is starting a new position as the director for climate adaptation and resilience at Abt Associates.
