Program Background

Pacific Australia Skills is a significant Australian investment which stands to make a major contribution to supporting social and economic growth in the region through strengthening the skills and training sector across the Pacific and Timor-Leste. Pacific Australia Skills builds on the achievements of 17 years of Australian Government support for skills and training in the Pacific.  

The Role

As part of the DVTPD team, the Careers Pathway Officer has a critical role in preparing TVET students for productive employment and contributing to social wellbeing.

The role supports students to develop career strategies, connect with employers, and build the skills, knowledge and attributes that will ensure long-term engagement in the Nauru workforce.

The role involves providing personalized career guidance, developing and delivering workshops and resources to support student employability, facilitating industry placements, and strengthening industry partnerships.

The role contributes to the Nauru Sustainable Development Strategy 2019-2030, especially:

• Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunities for all

• Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

The Careers Pathway Officer uses initiative to undertake activities consistent with the purpose of the role. Decision-making is expected to be collaborative and involves engaging with internal and external stakeholders as required.

Where decisions may involve sensitive or high-risk matters, the Officer will consult with senior managers in the Department of Vocational Training and Professional Development.

Roles and Responsibilities

Careers guidance

  • Conduct individual and group career counselling sessions with TVET students (including NSS TVET students) to assist in identifying career goals and pathways.
  • Maintain records of career guidance interactions with students.
  • Develop and deliver workshops on career-related topics such as resume writing, interview skills, and job search strategies.

Employment liaison

  • Develop relationships with Nauru employers to promote employment for TVET graduates.
  • Provide referral services to employers, identifying TVET graduates for local employment.
  • Identify barriers to employment (including barriers for people with disability), provide feedback to DVTPD senior managers, and assist in developing strategies to overcome barriers.

Industry placements/work experience 

  • Collaborate with industry partners and employers to create placement and job opportunities for students.
  • Work with the DVTPD Project Officer to ensure an effective Work Experience Program for current TVET students.

Communication

  • Promote stories of successful TVET graduates and their career paths.
  • Create and maintain a TVET careers-related social medial presence.

Selection Criteria

Essential Experience and Knowledge

Within the context of the role description, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities

  • Qualification in Counselling or Career Development, or similar, or willingness to gain the qualification (enrolment will be facilitated for suitable candidates) or Qualification in Teaching or other relevant qualifications will be considered.
  • Experience in the public or private sector in a teaching, management support or HR role would be highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of the employment context in Nauru.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to build and maintain relationships with students, teachers and industry partners.
  • Ability to collect data and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise good judgement.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage workload efficiently.Competence in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Desirable competencies

  • Strong network of industry connections.
  • Experience of working in the TVET sector.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), Child Protection, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH), prevention of human trafficking, environmental protection, anti-corruption and other DFAT safeguarding policies.
