Internship duration is six (6) months, UNPAID, and may be full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week).
Internship can be undertaken remotely, in a hybrid arrangement, or at the UN Premise, New York.
Full-time internships are initially for two months; part-time internships are initially for four months. Extensions up to six months are possible depending on division needs.
Position located in the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), Department of Peace Operations (DPO), UN Secretariat.
SSRU coordinates UN system and national/international partners on security sector reform and governance.
Team supports research, guidance, education, training, advocacy, and field missions.
Preferred educational backgrounds: computer science, analytics, statistics, information management, business analysis, or related fields. Skills in workflow documentation, data management, data visualization, and data cleaning. Conceptual knowledge of ETL, data governance, and promoting data literacy.
Key Responsibilities of Data Analytics Intern
Assist in mapping and analyzing SSRU data management practices.
Draft guidelines for data collection and management on field missions’ SSR work.
Support engagement with UN SSR Community of Practice and Interagency SSR Taskforce on data management.
Create dashboards to visualize SSR activities, country portfolios, and thematic data.
Assist in developing presentations on data-related aspects, e.g., toolkits or digital tools.
Support identifying, documenting, and developing automated workflows, e.g., using PowerAutomate.
Develop surveys, prototype tools, provide analysis, and generate reports with outcomes.
Support creation of data flows and pipelines for streamlined access and analysis.
Conduct analysis for reports, analytical papers, policy briefs, and factsheets.
Develop data visualizations for analysis and communication.
Assist with data aggregation and creation of interactive analytic reports.
Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s or equivalent).
Applicants to UN Internship Programme do not require professional work experience.
Must be studying a field closely related to the type of internship applied for.
Knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts.
Ability to design surveys and polls.
Languages
English and French are working languages of the UN Secretariat.
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of additional UN languages is an advantage.
