The Program:
Australia Assists is an Australian Government program that deploys skilled humanitarian specialists to support multilateral agencies, governments, civil society and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and conflict. Australia Assists’ Goal is to: Save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity during and in the aftermath of conflict, disasters and other humanitarian crises, and strengthen preparedness for the occurrence of such situations. The program’s Objective is: Targeted deployment of humanitarian expertise that meets the priorities and needs of Australia’s multilateral, bilateral and civil society partners and advances Australia’s international humanitarian priorities.
The Role:
The GEDSI Advisor will provide senior technical and operational support across the project lifecycle to ensure GEDSI is integrated into Australia Assists’ design, implementation, monitoring and learning. Responsibilities include country and regional analysis, deployment ready briefs and partner mapping; shaping DFAT aligned program and policy inputs; preparing and supporting deployee GEDSI engagement in mission; developing practical tools, ToR guidance and MERL templates; and identifying opportunities for mainstreamed and standalone GEDSI initiatives that link preparedness, response and longer-term resilience.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and consolidate GEDSI analysis across priority countries, building on existing gender analyses to deliver clear findings on equality, inclusion and barriers within national disaster management systems.
- Produce concise, deployment-ready country GEDSI profiles that summarise institutional arrangements, entry points, stakeholder considerations and contextual risks for deployee briefs.
- Map and summarise GEDSI-relevant organisations and networks at country level - including government ministries, line agencies, clusters, civil society, disability and women’s organisations, and technical networks
- Design and conduct comprehensive desk reviews and targeted data collection (DFAT, donors, government policies, deployee records, civil society) to identify technical, country and regional GEDSI gaps and opportunities
- Convene and contribute to GEDSI-focused communities of practice across the Australia Assists portfolio - synthesise learning, capture best practice examples, and disseminate practical guidance for replication.
- Contribute GEDSI inputs to program strategy, the cross-cutting themes section and reporting; ensure all GEDSI activities adhere to safeguarding, ethical and program policies
Selection criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in gender studies, disability/inclusive development, international development, social policy, humanitarian studies or a closely related discipline.
- Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) providing GEDSI technical support to multi-country or regional humanitarian and development projects within diverse geographic locations and cultural contexts.
- Proven work experience in Pacific contexts (country-level or regional programming), with strong cultural awareness and networks in the region. Candidates from the Indo-Pacific region are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated experience working with DFAT-funded programs or direct engagement with DFAT, and clear understanding of DFAT’s approach to GEDSI and cross-cutting themes.
- Strong technical knowledge of gender equality, disability inclusion (including social model approaches) and social inclusion in DRM/DRR contexts.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, facilitation and networking skills; culturally aware and politically astute in Pacific contexts.
