Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interns will work under the general guidance of a primary supervisor in the Women Human Rights and Gender Section (WHRGS), part of the Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch (ROLENDB).
  • WHRGS was established in 2007 to work on women’s human rights and gender integration across OHCHR activities.
  • Protects and promotes women’s human rights by highlighting discriminatory laws and policies and aligning them with international human rights law.
  • Promotes gender integration across OHCHR and broader UN planning and programmes.
  • Supports High Commissioner leadership on women’s human rights and gender equality.
  • Produces thematic reports, statements, internal guidance, tools, and conducts training, capacity-building, and briefings in women’s human rights and gender equality.
  • Facilitates dialogue among stakeholders and develops a network of experts and civil society organizations, including women human rights defenders, to leverage expertise and advance the women’s human rights agenda.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must be a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent or higher) or
  • Be a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent), preferably in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field, preferably with a focus on gender-related issues.
  • Applicants may also have graduated with a university degree as defined above and, if selected, must commence the internship on the date specified in the acceptance letter.
  • Professional work experience is not required for participation.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need to obtain appropriate visas and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
