Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is an intergovernmental organization and specialized UN agency that regulates the international postal service.
  • Comprising 192 member countries and headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, UPU’s mission is to promote quality, accessible postal services and facilitate social, cultural, and commercial communication worldwide.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of the Legal Affairs Department (DAJ), the intern will:
    • Carry out research and analysis, and prepare draft documents on legal issues related to UPU functions, particularly in public international law and administrative law (with reference to the UN common system).
    • Assist in the preliminary analysis of legal instruments such as treaties, agreements, regulations, resolutions, and other documents relevant to UPU work.
    • Support the Director and DAJ members in providing services within UPU’s competence, including preparing background papers, reports, synthesizing views and practices on legal issues, and drafting legal instruments (treaties, agreements, contracts, internal rules, or other legislative texts).

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Law student at a university or similar institution, with course in progress or about to be completed, or law graduate (graduated a maximum of six months prior to the internship start date).
  • Good knowledge of public international law, law of international organizations, and/or arbitration law.
  • Minimum age: 20 years.

Languages

  • Excellent oral and written command of French or English.
  • Good oral and written command of the other language.

Additional Information

  • This traineeship is reserved exclusively for students and recent graduates (graduated within six months prior to the internship start date).
  • The traineeship is remunerated in accordance with UPU rules.

Intern Specific Information

  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
  • Non-Swiss citizens or permanent residents may require the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
