Established in December 1999, UNDRR is the UN focal point for coordinating disaster risk reduction efforts and ensuring synergies among UN and regional activities in both developed and less developed countries
Led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff in Geneva headquarters and regional offices
Guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030
Supports regional and national implementation, catalyzes action, and increases global awareness by working with UN Member States, civil society, private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community
Internship Details:
Duration: 4–6 months
Location: UNDRR, Geneva, Switzerland
Status: UNPAID, full-time, in-person (five days per week)
Supervision: Head of Campaigns and Community
Key Responsibilities:
Support development of clear and impactful messaging for campaigns aligned with UNDRR’s mission and the Sendai Framework
Conduct research to identify effective communication strategies for target audiences, including governments, media professionals, and the public
Contribute to planning and implementation of global campaigns, including the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and World Tsunami Awareness Day
Assist in developing branding materials and visual assets for campaign promotion
Coordinate with journalists, editors, and media professionals to facilitate interviews, press briefings, and media coverage
Track and evaluate media outreach efforts to measure impact and reach
Provide logistical and administrative support for organizing events such as conferences, workshops, and webinars
Conduct background research and prepare briefing materials
Support administrative tasks, including documentation, meeting notes, and internal communications
Coordinate with other UNDRR teams, regional offices, and external partners to ensure successful execution of communication efforts
Qualifications/Special Skills
Enrolled in or completed:
Final year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), or
Graduate school programme (Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent)
Computer literate in standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, and MS Teams
Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
Ability to draft news articles and campaign pitches is desirable
Experience in creative content creation is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat
Fluency in spoken and written English is required
Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions
