Work Location

  • Switzerland – UNOG NGO Liaison Unit

Expected Duration

  • 3 to 6 months
  • Internship expected to start on 5 January 2026
  • Full-time and unpaid, five working days per week

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Office of the Director-General, within the NGO Liaison Unit of the Political Affairs and Partnerships Section in Geneva.
Under the supervision of the Chief of Section or Unit, the intern will:

  • Conduct research and draft or update NGO profiles and background notes in preparation for meetings with NGOs in Geneva.
  • Assist in organizing NGO meetings at the Palais des Nations, liaising with relevant UN colleagues.
  • Monitor NGO participation in UN meetings in Geneva, particularly the sessions of the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms, and take notes during side events.
  • Attend and take notes at strategic meetings or public events involving NGOs, and prepare concise summaries.
  • Support preparation of communication tools, including the monthly newsletter to NGOs, guidelines, flyers, and website updates to facilitate civil society engagement with the UN.
  • Conduct research on thematic issues relevant to the Office of the Director-General and assist in drafting talking points, speeches, and correspondence for the Director-General or Chief of Unit.
  • Contribute to drafting annual report articles and other communication materials.
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to the Unit and perform ad hoc tasks as requested.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Additional requirements:

  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship area.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word and MS Teams.
  • Strong drafting and communication skills are desirable.
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrolment or completion of studies upon request.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in both English and French (oral and written) is required.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country must obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
