Duties and Responsibilities
UNIS Vienna is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres under the Department of Global Communications (DGC) of the UN Secretariat. As the UN Information Centre, UNIS Vienna serves as the local voice of the UN in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia. It promotes awareness and understanding of the United Nations’ work and goals by engaging with media, government, academia, schools, and civil society.

The internship is located in the News and Media Unit of the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) in Vienna, Austria. This is an unpaid, full-time internship (40 hours/week) with an expected start date of 4 August 2025 for a 6-month duration.

The intern will support the team by performing the following duties, which may include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring German-language Austrian media coverage for national and UN-related topics
  • Translating and summarizing articles for a daily press review
  • Attending Austrian Government press conferences and summarizing key points
  • Drafting content for social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and preparing visuals using Canva
  • Drafting and editing various media texts (e.g., press releases, online articles) in both German and English
  • Conducting research on assigned topics
  • Assisting in the full production cycle of videos, photos, and audio to promote UN topics and organizational work
  • Supporting the preparation, implementation, and follow-up of press briefings, outreach events, high-level visits, and conferences
  • Performing other tasks as needed

Qualifications/Special Skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR
  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
    (Official written proof from the university supporting one of the above possibilities must be attached to the application)
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to its values
  • Show the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives
  • A relevant field of study related to the internship is required
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable
  • Experience with writing for social media and creating visual content using Canva is highly desirable

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required
  • Fluency in oral and written German is required
  • Knowledge of a UNIS client country language (Hungarian, Slovak, Slovene) is an asset

Intern-Specific Text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Selected candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
