Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is for 3-6 months and is UNPAID.
- It is full-time (35 hours per week), in-person at the United Nations premises in New York, USA.
- However, the working arrangement can be adjusted to part-time (20 hours per week) based on the needs of the successful candidate.
- A full-time internship is for an initial period of three months, and a part-time internship is for an initial period of four months.
- Internships may be extended up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Division.
This internship is located in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the General Assembly in June 2017. The Office has five main functions:
- Provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates across the United Nations System
- Enhance coordination and coherence across the 45 Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy
- Strengthen the delivery of UN counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States
- Improve visibility, advocacy, and resource mobilization for UN counter-terrorism efforts
- Ensure that due priority is given to counter-terrorism across the UN System and that preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the UN Global Strategy
The overall aim of the Centre is to support Member States in the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy through capacity building.
This internship is situated within the Countering Terrorism Section of UNCCT, which deals with:
- Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT)
- Border Security and Management (BSM)
- Cybersecurity and New Technology
- Preventing and Responding to Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)/Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN)
The Intern reports to a Head Unit in the Section, under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Countering-Terrorism Section.
The intern will perform the following functions:
- Design and develop visibility and communications materials, including:
- PowerPoint presentations
- Infographics
- Data visualizations
- Brochures, posters, banners
- Invitations, flyers, awareness, and learning materials
- Design communication materials for digital platforms, including social media and websites.
- Provide design and layout services, including rounds of revision and quality control for official reports and publications.
- Create graphically engaging reports, presentations, and other materials.
- Participate in organizing and/or setting up special events as necessary.
- Support the formatting and design of files and documents using:
- Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Collaborate with other members of the Office, including the communications team, to ensure synergy across departments and offices.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
Qualifications/Special Skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.
- Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or similar.
- Proficient in standard office automation equipment (scanner, printer, etc.).
- Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the type of internship is required.
Applicants must be a:
- Student in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent
- OR have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme

Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
- Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset.

- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
