Job Description

Work Location

  • In-person, New York

Expected Duration

  • 3 months, with possible extension up to six months depending on Division needs and intern performance
  • Desired start date: 5 January 2026

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internship within the South and Southeast Asia Team, Asia and the Pacific Division, DPPA-DPO at UN Headquarters in New York
  • Full-time, unpaid, 35 hours per week, under supervision of assigned staff member
  • Internship may be in-person, remote, or hybrid
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Conducting research on South and Southeast Asia peace and security issues
    • Media monitoring and analysis of current events
    • Drafting thematic papers, background documents, correspondence, etc.
    • Attending conferences and meetings, taking notes
    • Assisting in organizing meetings
    • Assisting in data collection and information management
    • Supporting project management tasks

  • Education:
    • Must be enrolled in or have completed:
      • A graduate school program (second university degree or higher)
      • OR the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level)
    • Field of study must be closely related to the internship type
    • No prior professional work experience required

Languages

  • English: fluency required (spoken and written)
  • French: working language of UN Secretariat (knowledge beneficial but not mandatory)

  • Internships are unpaid; travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions
  • Interns outside the host country may require a valid visa and/or work authorization

Intern Specific Notes

  • Interns are not financially remunerated
  • Costs for travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern
  • Interns must obtain appropriate visa/work authorization if not citizens or permanent residents of the host country
