The internship is UNPAID and may be full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week).
The internship will be undertaken in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premises, New York, United States.
Hosted by the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD), Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA).
The Branch is the advisory and research arm of SCAD with responsibilities including:
Preparing the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council (mandated by GA resolution 686 (VII) of 1952).
Providing guidance on Council practice/procedure to Member States, the Secretariat, NGOs, and academics.
Servicing the Security Council Informal Working Group on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions.
Assisting with familiarization of new Council members on evolving practices and working methods.
Acting as the UN Secretariat focal point on Security Council reform issues.
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Branch, the intern may:
Conduct research on political issues, including those related to countries and thematic mandates on the Security Council agenda.
Assist with documentation and cataloguing of the evolution of Council practices and subsidiary bodies.
Conduct research, analysis, and draft studies for the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council.
Support outreach efforts, including preparation of social media content.
Assist in developing and updating the Division’s computerized databases on contemporary Council practices.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (Master’s or equivalent, or higher).
Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
Field of study closely related to the internship is required.
Ability to conduct research and draft reports.
Proficiency in standard software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and office equipment (scanner, printer, etc.).
Knowledge or experience with social media content creation and monitoring (primarily X, formerly Twitter) is an advantage.
Knowledge of visualization tools such as Power BI and Canva is an additional asset.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish).

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
