The position is in the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time (5 days/week, 40 hours).
Offered on an in-person or remote basis, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the Regional Office for Africa (ROA) of the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC).
Tentative start date: 5 November 2025, initial period of three months.
Interns must have a valid visa; travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
Remote work requires a computer with Office 365, updated OS, firewall enabled, and password manager for security.
Responsibilities:
Support the dissemination of UNCTAD’s research.
Assist in organizing briefings and meetings with member states, RECs, partners, parliamentarians, and other stakeholders.
Assist in developing concept notes and project proposals in selected ALDC ROA work areas.
Assist in analyzing topical issues in Africa related to UNCTAD’s mandate and ALDC ROA work areas.
Identify updated and new relevant information and research documents on UNCTAD-related issues.
Prepare briefing notes, workshop reports, and compile statistics.
Attend and summarize conferences and meetings as necessary.
Identify initiatives and major meetings at African and regional levels for UNCTAD participation (e.g., UN, African Development Bank, Afreximbank, AfCFTA Secretariat).
Update and improve information in office databases, perform internet-based research, and catalogue relevant information.
Assist with other assignments as assigned by the supervisor.
Interns shall generally:
Observe all applicable UN rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives (ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11).
Provide the receiving departments/offices with copies of all materials prepared during the internship; UN retains property rights to such materials.
Respect UN impartiality and independence; not accept external instructions regarding services performed.
Refrain from communicating non-public information to media or external sources without written authorization; this obligation continues after the internship.
Avoid conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or receiving department/office.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (Master’s or higher).
Enrolled in or have completed the final year of a first university degree program (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
Must have a university degree in economics.
Computer literate in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
Demonstrated interest in the UN and commitment to the Charter ideals.
Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ability to conduct desktop research is desirable.
Ability to draft concept notes and research project/project proposals is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of French is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
Non-citizen interns may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
