Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Statistics Division’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics internship is for a minimum of two months, with the possibility of extension up to six months if required.
  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time (35 hours per week).
  • Interns work under the supervision of a staff member in the assigned department.
  • ESCAP Statistics Division operates under the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities, and mandates from the General Assembly, ECOSOC, and ESCAP resolutions.
  • Core areas of work include:
    • Capacity building in statistics
    • Regional data collection and analysis
    • Publication of statistical and analytical materials
  • Key partners include:
    • National statistical offices and statistical systems in the region
    • UN DESA and other UN agencies
    • Regional and international organizations with mandates in statistics
  • The Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) work supports implementation of ESCAP resolution 71/14 on the Asia and Pacific CRVS Decade, 2015–2024.

Duties may include:

  • Supporting management of the regional CRVS initiative, including programme monitoring and evaluation
  • Conducting literature reviews on theoretical frameworks, indicators, and country practices
  • Contributing to the drafting of research papers and technical documents
  • Participating in meetings, expert group discussions, seminars, and training workshops
  • Supporting capacity-building activities in countries across the region
  • Assisting in communication efforts, including updates to the CRVS website and newsletter
  • Performing other tasks as required

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate-level programme (Master’s degree or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • No prior work experience is required
  • Academic training, coursework, or skills should be relevant and beneficial to the United Nations

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an asset
  • The official UN languages are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish

Intern-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
  • Non-citizen interns may require a visa and work authorization
  • Selected candidates must confirm and arrange visa requirements before accepting the internship offer
