Duties and Responsibilities
The Procurement Unit, under the Division of Administration of ESCAP, provides services to support ESCAP programmes and operations, as well as purchasing actions for various UN Secretariat offices in the Asia-Pacific Region. The intern will work directly with the Chief of the Procurement Unit. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Becoming familiar with the Procurement Unit’s activities, following instructions and guidance described in manuals and regulations
- Analyzing and applying business methodologies to identify and improve procurement processes
- Gaining exposure to different cultures and backgrounds through conferences, meetings, and discussions
- Assisting with the preparation of documents and implementation of a document/file management system
- Performing ad-hoc duties and related initiatives as assigned by the supervisor
- Participating in team meetings
- Preparing presentations, reports, and statistics
- Conducting routine follow-up actions on procurement matters and updating the supervisor on progress
- Drafting oral and written responses to procurement-related queries from internal and external clients
- Conducting market research to identify potential vendors (local and international) and submitting reports to buyers
- Assisting vendors with registration on the UNGM website and reporting status to buyers
- Supporting communications with contractors (e.g., verifying bank details)
- Participating in procurement-related training sessions for operations and project staff
- Contributing to knowledge networks and communities of practice
- Coordinating with various stakeholders
- Assisting in drafting and preparing official documents
- Providing administrative support to ongoing projects
Please note:
- The internship is unpaid and full-time
- Internship duration: 2–6 months
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day
Qualifications / Special Skills
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation
Additional requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications
- Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its ideals
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and belief systems, with openness to different opinions and views

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
