The ESCAP secretariat supports inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development through action-oriented knowledge, technical assistance, and capacity-building aligned with national objectives and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Asia-Pacific region is not on track to achieve the SDGs, particularly environmental goals. It faces complex, interconnected challenges including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
These environmental challenges impact development, human rights, and equity, requiring new insights, international cooperation, and stakeholder engagement.
The Division is seeking interns with a proactive mindset and commitment to addressing barriers to progress.
The position is located in the Environment and Development Policy Section, Environment and Development Division.
This Section leads on innovative environmental policy development related to climate change, air pollution, water resources, nature-based solutions, ocean sustainability, and environmental governance.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time (35 hours/week), with in-person work in Bangkok preferred, though partial remote work may be considered.
Interns will contribute to policy advocacy and decision-making support through:
Establishing cooperation frameworks and platforms for countries and cities.
Developing knowledge products, policy briefs, infographics, and advocacy tools.
Supporting NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) enhancement aligned with the Paris Agreement, promoting equitable, low-carbon, climate- and disaster-resilient development pathways.
The intern will support the delivery of projects and activities, including but not limited to:
Assisting with research and data collection/analysis for knowledge products.
Developing infographics, interactive visuals (e.g., GHG projections/scenarios), and posters.
Supporting the development of policy briefs and outreach materials.
Assisting in drafting agendas, background documents, and materials for side events and exhibits.
Supporting the organization of webinars, online courses, subregional/regional consultations, and SDG Help Desk climate awareness activities.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, a Master’s or Ph.D. programme.
Preference is given to those who have completed their Master’s.
Proof of education must be submitted with the application; official certification may be required later.
No prior professional experience is required.
Field of study must be related to the internship.
Good knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, and MS Teams is required.
Design software skills (e.g., for infographics, posters, publications) are desirable.
Video development skills are an asset.
Excellent written and spoken English is required.
Ability to draft news articles or social media posts is desirable.
Ability to design surveys and polls is also desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s or their sponsor’s responsibility.
Non-resident interns may need to obtain appropriate visas and work authorization.
