Job Description

Work Location

  • Flexible: Hybrid, fully remote, or in-person

Expected Duration

  • 3–6 months, with preferred start in November/December 2025 or sooner

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internship duration: 3–6 months, with a five–six month commitment preferred
  • UNPAID, full-time (35 hours per week) on United Nations premises in New York, USA
  • Flexible arrangement: Can be adjusted to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote based on candidate needs
  • Location: United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT), United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), New York Headquarters
  • Full-time internship duration agreed upon by selected candidate and UNCCT

About UNOCT and UNCCT

  • Established by the UN General Assembly in June 2017
  • Five main functions:
    • Provide leadership on UN counter-terrorism mandates
    • Enhance coordination across 45 Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force entities
    • Strengthen delivery of UN counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States
    • Improve visibility, advocacy, and resource mobilization for UN counter-terrorism efforts
    • Ensure priority to counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism is embedded in the UN Global Strategy
  • Overall aim: Support Member States in implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy through capacity building
  • Countering Terrorism Section focuses on:
    • Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT)
    • Border Security and Management (BSM)
    • Cybersecurity and New Technology
    • Addressing Terrorist Use of Weapons
    • Regional engagements in Central Asia and the Arab region

Intern Responsibilities

  • Conduct substantive research and analysis related to programme activities
  • Support preparation of project documentation, technical inputs, visibility materials, reports, briefing papers, talking points, background notes, speeches, and web stories
  • Participate in meetings and draft notes, summaries, and reports
  • Monitor trends and developments in counter-terrorism, including finance of terrorism, border security, cybersecurity, CBRN, small arms, and regional developments
  • Organize and process relevant information and input into UNOCT databases
  • Assist in organizing fact-finding missions, training courses, workshops, conferences, and other capacity-building events
  • Perform other tasks as required

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate programme (Master’s or higher)
    • Enrolled in or recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
  • Field of study must be closely related to the internship
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Copilot, or similar software
  • Competency with standard office equipment (scanner, printer, etc.)
  • Strong interest in UN work and commitment to UN Charter ideals
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, showing tolerance and understanding

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Knowledge of an additional UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset
