UNDRR is the designated focal point for disaster risk reduction within the UN system, guiding, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
Internship is unpaid, full-time (40 hours/week), and based in the UNDRR Office in Bangkok.
Reports to the Head of the Information Design & Technology Solutions (IDTS) unit, within the Communication, Advocacy, Knowledge Management, and ICT Section.
Responsibilities include:
Assist in designing and prototyping AI algorithms and data analysis models for projects such as Damage and Losses systems, knowledge hubs, and unified data hub with querying functionality
Contribute to the development and enhancement of internal tools for data processing, model training, and AI architecture improvement
Support creation, deployment, and optimization of machine learning models, focusing on scalability and performance
Conduct research and experiments with advanced AI technologies, including generative AI, deep learning, natural language processing, and LLM tools, to identify innovative solutions
Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) and preprocessing to prepare large datasets for model training and analysis
Assist in integrating AI solutions into existing workflows and systems
Monitor, evaluate, and document progress and outcomes of AI-related projects, contributing recommendations for improvements
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with organizational objectives
Perform additional duties as required
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or completed a graduate program (Master’s or higher)
Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s)
Degree in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or related field required
Proficiency in:
Programming languages commonly used in AI/data science (e.g., Python)
Deep learning/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
Building scalable ML models using large datasets
Cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud for AI/ML development (desirable)
Conversational design for AI interfaces (desirable)
Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and in a team
Interest in the UN mission and ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds
Applicants may be asked to provide a portfolio of coursework
Field of study must closely relate to the type of internship applied for
Must be a student in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program, or have completed one of these programs; proof required
Languages
Fluency in English is required
French knowledge is optional
