UNDRR, created in December 1999, is the designated focal point in the UN system for coordinating disaster reduction efforts and ensuring synergies among UN and regional activities.
UNDRR is led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG) and has over 140 staff in Geneva and regional offices.
The office guides, monitors, analyzes, and reports on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation, catalyzes action, and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk.
The internship is unpaid, full-time (40 hours per week), and based in the UNDRR Office in Bangkok, under the supervision of the Head of Information Design & Technology Solutions (IDTS) unit, within the Communication, Advocacy, Knowledge Management, and ICT Section.
Intern Responsibilities
Assist in designing and prototyping user interfaces for ongoing projects, including Damage and Losses systems, Knowledge Hubs, and the unified Data Hub.
Conduct and assist in user research through surveys, interviews, and usability testing to improve usability and accessibility of digital platforms.
Develop and refine wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes to visualize and test UI/UX concepts.
Support the creation and maintenance of design systems, UI components, and style guides to ensure consistency across platforms.
Collaborate with developers, data teams, and stakeholders to align UX/UI improvements with functional and technical requirements.
Document design processes, research insights, and usability findings to contribute to iterative improvements.
Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
Relevant field of study related to the internship is required.
Proficiency in:
User research methods, including usability testing, surveys, and interviews
Interaction design principles to create intuitive experiences
Information architecture, organizing content for usability and navigation
High- and low-fidelity prototyping and wireframing using tools such as Figma
Conducting usability evaluations and improving user experiences based on insights
Conversational design and AI-related products (desirable)
Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and in a team
Interest in the mission of the United Nations and commitment to its values
Applicants may be asked to provide a portfolio of coursework
Must be a student in the final year or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program
Languages
Fluency in English is required
Knowledge of French is an asset
