The Environment and Development Division, Sustainable Urban Development Section, is seeking 1–2 interns for a minimum of four months, preferably six months (maximum internship duration).
The internship is unpaid, full-time, in-person, and five days per week (35 hours), under the supervision of a staff member in the assigned department or office.
The Sustainable Urban Development Section supports ESCAP member States and stakeholders to advance sustainable and inclusive urban development across Asia and the Pacific, focusing on:
Facilitating intergovernmental processes to strengthen regional cooperation and implement global/regional frameworks.
Providing technical assistance and supporting capacity development.
Developing and disseminating knowledge products to enhance awareness and support evidence-based decision-making.
Facilitating networking and partnerships to mobilize knowledge, resources, and innovation.
Daily responsibilities depend on the intern’s background, assigned office, and internship period.
Specific Duties May Include:
Provide support to organize and conduct meetings/webinars relevant to the section’s work, including drafting documents and communications materials, preparing and backstopping intergovernmental meetings, and follow-up activities (approximately 40%).
Assist with organizational and substantive tasks linked to programme and project implementation, such as urban climate action, SDG localization, and sustainable urban development (approximately 30%).
Conduct research and identify case studies on urban development, policies, and programmes impacting inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development in the Asia-Pacific region (approximately 20%).
Participate in day-to-day operational tasks of the Section, including responding to information requests, supporting presentation development, and updating web pages related to the section’s work (approximately 10%).
Qualifications / Special Skills
Education Requirements:
Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s or higher) in international development, sustainable development, urban planning/development, policy analysis, environmental management/science, social science, international relations, or related fields.
Or enrolled in, or completed, the final year of a first university degree (minimum bachelor’s) in the above fields.
Special Skills:
Good command of Microsoft Suite beyond Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Video-editing skills (desirable).
Graphic design and creativity skills for urban context (desirable).
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of another language used in the Asia-Pacific region is an asset.
Additional Information
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need appropriate visas or work/employment authorization.
