  • 2–6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The internship is with the Social Development Division, Sustainable Socioeconomic Transformation Section (SETS).
  • Duration is 2–4 months with possible extension up to 6 months depending on departmental needs.
  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time, requiring 37.5 hours per week under supervision of a staff member in SETS.
  • The Social Development Division has three sections:
    • Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS)
    • Sustainable Socioeconomic Transformation Section (SETS)
    • Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS)
  • SETS focuses on poverty reduction, financing for social development, inequality, and social protection.
  • Daily responsibilities depend on the intern’s background, assigned office, and internship period.

Key duties may include:

  • Undertaking desk research and data processing, including statistical analysis using R, Excel, and other econometric/statistical software. Topics may include poverty reduction, inequality, social protection, and vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, migrants, youth, older persons, and women.
  • Supporting the development of inputs to reports, summaries, and transcripts.
  • Assisting in the development of materials and content for social media.
  • Assisting in the organization of workshops, conferences, and expert group meetings.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent, or higher)
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
  • No professional work experience is required, but a relevant field of study is required.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.
  • Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
  • Applicants should provide examples of how they meet these criteria.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

  • Interns are not financially remunerated.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship country may need the appropriate visa and work authorization.
