Job Description

Work Location

  • In-Person or Remote (Geneva, Switzerland)

Expected Duration

  • 17 November 2025 – 16 February 2026 (3 months)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work under the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Division of Technology and Logistics (DTL)
  • Full-time internship (40 hours/week), unpaid
  • For in-person internships, valid visa required; all travel, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility
  • Assist the Trade Facilitation Section (TFS) in research and technical assistance activities aimed at:
    • Promoting trade facilitation and capacity building
    • Improving cross-border clearance efficiency and performance
    • Supporting trade growth and sustainability, particularly in developing countries
  • Perform tasks under the guidance of a supervisor, including:
    • Participation in meetings with supervisor and team
    • Conduct research and draft analyses related to trade facilitation policies, reforms, and UNCTAD products/tools
    • Attend, service, and summarize conferences, webinars, and meetings
    • Assist in preparation and standardization of training materials for the UNCTAD Empowerment programme for National Trade Facilitation Committees (NTFCs)
    • Prepare digital and paper-based products (brochures, presentations, articles) to promote the Empowerment programme
    • Assist in organization and delivery of in-person and online workshops, including preparatory work and post-event reporting
    • Conduct research and summarize meetings on transit coordination among developing countries
    • Explore the role of communication in enhancing transparency and visibility of national trade facilitation committees
    • Draft short reports, charts, and graphs on specific issues
    • Support preparation of relevant documents (presentations, project documents)
    • Support trade logistics and supply chain activities as required
    • Support other TFS activities as needed
  • Remote interns must have:
    • A computer with modern browser and Office 365 applications
    • Latest version of Microsoft Windows, software, and security updates
    • Built-in firewall enabled
    • Password manager for secure access to UNCTAD/UN resources
  • Interns must:
    • Observe all UN rules, regulations, procedures, and directives
    • Provide copies of all work products to the receiving department; UN retains all property rights
    • Respect UN impartiality and independence; not accept instructions from external authorities
    • Maintain confidentiality of UN information during and after the internship
    • Refrain from conduct incompatible with UN aims and objectives
    • Understand there is no expectation of employment post-internship; ineligible for UN professional positions for six months

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must, at time of application, meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate programme (Master’s or higher)
    • Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
  • Interns should:
    • Be computer literate in standard software applications
    • Demonstrate interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter
    • Demonstrate ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
  • No prior professional experience required; field of study should relate to internship focus

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset
