The position is in the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Statistics Analysis Unit, UNCTAD Statistics Service (STAT).
Internship is unpaid, full-time (five days per week / 40 hours).
Interns must have a valid visa; all costs of travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses are covered by the intern.
STAT engages in statistical compilation and dissemination in areas including south-south cooperation, illicit financial flows, trade, investment, debt, global macro-economy, and sustainable development.
Training and mentoring provided throughout the internship.
Carrying out tasks under supervision of the Chief of Statistics Analysis Unit, the intern will:
Assist with maintaining and updating UNCTADstat and other databases through automated coding solutions, and provide documentation.
Assist Statistics Services with organization of meetings, including preparation of documentation.
Assist with analyses and report writing.
Perform other duties as required, including outreach activities, reporting, and implementation of projects.
Remote work requirements:
Full access to a computer with a modern browser and Office 365.
Latest Microsoft Windows OS, software, and security updates installed.
Built-in software firewall enabled.
Password manager enabled to secure access to UNCTAD/UN resources.
Interns must:
Observe all applicable UN rules, regulations, procedures, and directives (ST/AI/2020/1).
Provide departments/offices with copies of all materials prepared during the internship; UN retains all property rights.
Respect impartiality and independence; not accept external instructions regarding services performed under the internship.
Not communicate confidential information to media or external sources without authorization.
Refrain from any conduct that adversely reflects on the UN or the receiving department/office.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in, or completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level) in statistics, mathematics, economics, or a numerate discipline.
Interns should:
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter.
Demonstrate ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Practical experience with command-line statistics programs (R or Python) is desirable.
Work experience in data processing and basic statistical analysis is desirable.
Good communication skills and interest in statistical/economic/econometrics issues are advantageous.
No prior professional work experience is required.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of French is desirable.
