Duties and Responsibilities

Office Background

  • The Secretary-General established the United Nations Sustainable Development Group System-Wide Evaluation Office (SWEO) to strengthen oversight, transparency, accountability, and collective learning across the UNSDG, in line with the 2024 UNSDG System-Wide Evaluation Policy.
  • SWEO is responsible for conducting a small number of global system-wide evaluations on strategic and relevant issues related to the UN development system.
  • Ongoing evaluations include one on the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy. New evaluations in 2025 may include the UN Sustainable Development Group support to the SDG transformation pathways and the UN Youth Strategy.
  • SWEO also generates system-wide evaluation evidence to enhance knowledge sharing and promote learning, including syntheses, summaries, and evidence maps.
  • Additional work includes preparing evaluation guidance, developing systems, and producing communications.

Internship Duties
The internship provides practical experience in an independent evaluation office within a multicultural and intergovernmental setting. Interns report to full-time professional staff and may:

  • Contribute to preparation of documents and guidance materials through desk research and drafting reports/papers.
  • Assist evaluation teams in collecting, organizing, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Support preparation of evaluation knowledge management products, communications, and services (databases, newsletters, web platforms, etc.).
  • Assist in preparing presentations and communications, including drafting, editing, data visualization, graphics, photos, and videos.
  • Help coordinate workplans and strategies.
  • Support outreach and engagement for meetings, events, talking points, and background notes.
  • Draft minutes of meetings and ensure follow-up.
  • Assist with development of office systems as required.

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree as defined above.

Preferred areas of study:

  • Social sciences, economics, public administration (preferably with coursework in evaluation or applied research methodologies).

Competencies:

  • Strong interest in monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
  • Commitment to the work of the UN and SDGs.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Willingness to acquire new knowledge.
  • Ability to work in a team and multicultural environment.
  • Capacity to deliver quality results on time.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Advantage: data analysis/visualization skills and knowledge of applications such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, R, STATA, NVivo, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, etc.

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian) is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • For internships in the USA, non-US citizens or permanent residents may need a G4 visa.
  • Interns must ensure valid visa and, if required, employment authorization (CPT/OPT).
