When navigating the United Nations recruitment process, you need all the help you can get.
“I recognized a significant need for a tool that provides strategic guidance and support aligned with U.N. guidelines,” Emad Karim, an advocacy, campaigns, and innovation coordinator at UN Women, told Devex of an AI tool he developed to assist in completing U.N. job applications.
As impressive as some AI tech is, in my book, nothing beats getting U.N. career advice from a human U.N. recruiter, which is why in this edition of Career Hub I’m also sharing insights from a UN Women recruitment specialist on how applicants can stand out. Plus, featured job postings from the likes of UNICEF, World Vision, and many more.

Recruiter Insights: UN Women
Working with UN Women is an aspiration for many professionals looking to make an impact on gender equality within the U.N. To get a foot in the door, Lyudmila Anderson, a recruitment human resources specialist at the organization, shares some tips.
Desired experience. Practical experience, such as internships with relevant NGOs or fieldwork in developing regions, is highly valued. U.N. volunteer opportunities also “provide a good entry point into gaining that U.N.-context experience that could help candidates stand out,” she says.
Passion for progress. “Regardless of the role that potential candidates may be interested in applying for, our hiring managers always pay attention to the candidates’ passion and commitment to our organization’s mandate,” she says.
Emerging roles. While it is always focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, “we anticipate a rising demand for experts in climate change and gender, digitalization, green and blue economies, as well as climate-resilient agriculture and other related fields,” she says.

Ready to apply? An assist from AI
UN Women’s Emad Karim has developed UN Style GPT, a free customized AI tool to help you apply for jobs with the United Nations, as well as to create reports and communication products that adhere to U.N. guidelines.
The tool, which he has developed as a personal project that is not officially affiliated with the U.N., “addresses the need for enhanced support in preparing for UN employment processes, offering tailored guidance for applications, technical assessments, and competency-based interviews," he says.
Karim will be presenting the tool at an event for Devex Pro members next week, exploring how global development professionals can use AI tools. This is part of a week of premium content featuring events, insider articles and analyses, and funding reports on the key forces shaping global development — exclusively for Devex Pro members.

Around the watercooler
News and views from around global development worth knowing about.
COP concerns. It’s hard to get an uncensored perspective from inside Azerbaijan, which raises concerns about whether there can be meaningful participation of civil society at the upcoming U.N. climate summit.
Grant gesture. New revisions in federal grantmaking guidance are poised to make it easier for USAID to work with smaller, local organizations. It all sounds good, but it’s likely to put more strain on an already overtaxed USAID workforce. [Pro]
Sister-in-arms. For three decades, Sister Medhin Tesfay has helped thousands of people living in poverty in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Devex met Tesfay at her home to discuss her unrelenting devotion to humanitarian work in peacetime, war, and drought.
