Presented by Seton Hall University School of Diplomacy and International Relations

When I look at what the data shows about the topics that resonate the most with our audience, job salaries and USAID are two of the big ones. That’s one of the reasons that our latest job board data analysis focuses on positions with, you guessed it, USAID.
As one of the largest aid agencies globally, we had plenty of job postings to sift through, allowing us to present a pretty good picture of what job seekers can expect to earn depending on the job and its location.
In this edition of Career Hub, I’m sharing a few key takeaways from our USAID salary analysis. Plus, featured job postings from the likes of Chemonics International, UNDP, and more.

Salary insights: USAID
As part of our ongoing effort to spotlight salary trends across the sector, we dug into USAID job salary ranges. Here are a few key figures from our analysis of over 700 Devex job postings from the past 12 months that help explain how the bilateral behemoth approaches pay.
$221,900 — The highest maximum annual salary for any role we looked at. This position was, unsurprisingly, based in Washington, D.C. While North America had the highest average max salary ($166,230) of any region, the country with the top average was Austria ($181,215).
51.3% — The percentage of jobs analyzed that were senior level. The GS-14 and GS-15 general pay scale levels, which represent the largest segment of these senior positions, had an average salary range of $150,616 - $173,319.
$6,163 — The lowest minimum salary for any role analyzed. This position was based in Zambia and representative of a varied salary range in eastern Africa. The region also featured one of the highest single salaries ($159,950 in Kenya) and had an average max salary of $83,793.

Network your way into the World Bank
“I want to express interest in a given organization ... through connecting with them as a professional [not a candidate].”
— Roberto Amorosino, former senior HR specialist, World BankGiven how competitive World Bank roles are, networking is essential to bettering your chances. Not all consulting opportunities are posted publicly, either, and these can be discovered when networking as well. Here are a few tips from Roberto Amorosino, former senior HR specialist with the bank, as seen in our recently published guide to getting hired by the World Bank.
Connect as a professional. One key to networking with bank contacts, or any development professional, is to be “visible, not as a candidate, but as a professional ... that's the best way to demonstrate that I can be a resource,” which is ultimately what you want to get across.
Keep the focus on them. Show that you are in tune with the contact’s work and then demonstrate how you might fit into it in terms of a potential working relationship. By doing so, “me, as a reviewer, as a listener, I value that you have done research.”
Maximize your current network. Rather than only focusing on gaining new contacts at the bank, don’t overlook the value that lies in your existing network. Even loose connections have the potential to help you reach your career goals.
Extend the conversation. Whether it’s over LinkedIn, email, or the phone, “the most important thing to do right away is to agree on how to keep the conversation going.” It’s usually as simple as asking your contact if it would be fine to keep in touch.

Around the watercooler
News and views from around global development worth knowing about.
• Where does Trump stand on foreign aid? While the Republican presidential nominee has somewhat distanced himself from Project 25 and its deep aid cut proposals, the party’s official platform makes no mention of U.S. foreign assistance.
• Promising malaria treatment facing resistance. Monoclonal antibodies could be the next big thing in malaria prevention. But several factors, including a reluctant pharmaceutical industry, have seriously slowed deployment.
• ‘Climate finance’ for non-climate projects. Almost 40% of 2021 bilateral aid badged as climate finance was for projects that “would have happened anyway," according to a Development Initiatives study. [Devex Pro]
