Global development jobs are competitive. “Hundreds and sometimes thousands of people are applying for the same job as you,” shares Tom LeaMond, Devex CV writing expert who led a webinar — titled “Your 60 minute guide to a stand-out global development CV” — for Devex career account members last week. “In order to stand out, you need a really stand-out CV,” he explains.

When it comes to global development CVs, standard advice does not always apply. LeaMond walks through some of the differences in development CVs and how to handle common dilemmas such as numerous short-term consultancies and career gaps between assignments.

The first half of the first page of your CV is the most important real estate. LeaMond shows real examples based on a recruiter-approved template of how to maximize this section to ensure your CV ends up in the “yes pile” as well as a simple formula for communicating your achievements. “Do not just paste a job description,” he warns.
