This internship is UNPAID and full-time, with interns working five days per week (40 hours).
Located within the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment (CAE), Border Management Branch (BMB), Division for Operations (DO), UNODC, Nairobi, Kenya.
Desired starting date: January 2026.
Organized crime is a major threat to the environment, including:
Wildlife trafficking
Crimes in the fisheries sector
Waste trafficking
Illegal mining
UNODC supports Member States in preventing and responding to crimes that affect the environment.
Under supervision of professional staff, the intern will:
Undertake research using electronic sources on transnational organized crime, with emphasis on Minerals crime and other relevant topics.
Assist in drafting concept notes and background documents to suggest operational approaches for the Programme.
Support desk work, including fact-checking, editing, and proofreading.
Assist in the preparation of promotional materials, social media posts, and website updates.
Support data collection and organization, including establishing and maintaining files using standard organizational methods.
Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher)
Enrolled in or recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams).
Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.
Field of study closely related to the internship (e.g., criminology, law, political or social sciences, environmental studies, international relations).
Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts.
Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or completion of relevant degree programs.
Languages
Fluency in English and French (spoken and written) is required.
Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).
Additional Information
Interns are not financially remunerated.
Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country may need to obtain appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
