  • Nairobi, Kenya (in-person, full-time)

Expected Duration

  • 3 to 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • This internship is UNPAID and full-time, with interns working five days per week (40 hours).
  • Located within the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment (CAE), Border Management Branch (BMB), Division for Operations (DO), UNODC, Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Desired starting date: January 2026.
  • Organized crime is a major threat to the environment, including:
    • Wildlife trafficking
    • Crimes in the fisheries sector
    • Waste trafficking
    • Illegal mining
  • UNODC supports Member States in preventing and responding to crimes that affect the environment.
  • Under supervision of professional staff, the intern will:
    • Undertake research using electronic sources on transnational organized crime, with emphasis on Minerals crime and other relevant topics.
    • Assist in drafting concept notes and background documents to suggest operational approaches for the Programme.
    • Support desk work, including fact-checking, editing, and proofreading.
    • Assist in the preparation of promotional materials, social media posts, and website updates.
    • Support data collection and organization, including establishing and maintaining files using standard organizational methods.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in or recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams).
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.
  • Field of study closely related to the internship (e.g., criminology, law, political or social sciences, environmental studies, international relations).
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts.
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or completion of relevant degree programs.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and French (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).

  • Interns are not financially remunerated.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country may need to obtain appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should verify visa requirements before accepting the internship
