Duties and Responsibilities

  • Background: On 8 September 2022, the General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 76/306 to establish a UN Youth Office as a dedicated entity for youth affairs within the Secretariat.
  • The UN Youth Office leads the UN’s efforts on youth development, focusing on raising international awareness, promoting youth rights, and encouraging stronger youth participation in formulating, implementing, and evaluating development, peace and security, human rights, and humanitarian frameworks.
  • Internship Duties:
    • Work five days per week, full time (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.) at the United Nations Youth Office in New York, under the supervision of a staff member.
    • Daily responsibilities vary depending on the intern’s background, assigned department, and period of internship.
    • Support the organization of special events, conferences, workshops, and High-Level events.
    • Assist with procedures related to travel for meeting participants, including the preparation of travel expense reports linked to official missions.
    • Create, update, and organize control spreadsheets related to travel.
    • Prepare and disseminate emails and other internal communications related to travel and operational processes.
    • Analyze vendor forms to request the upload of their bank information into the system.
    • Conduct research on selected aspects of programmes, operations, and other activities; contribute to data collection, analysis, dissemination, and knowledge sharing.
    • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Meet one of the following requirements:
    • Enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
    • Enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience; however, a field of study related to the internship is required.
  • Must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
  • Experience in youth engagement or youth-related processes is an asset.
  • Experience in coordination and administration-related processes is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language (e.g., French) is desirable.

Intern Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should clarify visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
