Expected Duration

  • 3–6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Duration of the internship is three (3) months, with possibility of extension up to six (6) months.
  • Internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week).
  • Internship can be undertaken remotely or in a hybrid arrangement at the UN Premises, New York, United States.
  • Full-time internship initial period: 2 months; Part-time internship initial period: 4 months.
  • Internships may be extended depending on the needs of the Division.

Org. Setting and Reporting

  • Located in the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Section of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
  • DDR Section provides planning and operational support to DDR programmes and community violence reduction in various peacekeeping missions, including MINUSCA, MONUSCO, UNSOM, UNSMIL, and UNOAU.
  • Section also supports Special Political Missions and non-mission settings with planning for DDR and related processes.
  • OROLSI was established in 2007 to coordinate activities in police, justice, corrections, mine action, DDR, and security sector reform.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in drafting Briefing Notes, reports, and other internal documents.
  • Conduct research on current developments related to DDR in assigned countries.
  • Support the Inter-Agency Working Group on DDR, including reviewing the Integrated DDR Standards.
  • Assist in developing and disseminating communication and public information materials.
  • Maintain fact sheets and other information repositories on peacekeeping missions.
  • Attend conferences and meetings relevant to the DDR Section and provide verbal or written briefings.
  • Assist with administrative work, including organizing meetings.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s)
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.
  • Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
