Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations, founded in 1948 to contribute to the region’s economic and social development.
  • ECLAC’s mission includes:
    • Designing, monitoring, and evaluating public policies.
    • Providing advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments.
    • Supporting regional and international cooperation and coordination activities.
  • The internship will be in the Statistics Division, Santiago. Duration: 2 months (depending on office needs). Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period on an “as-needed” basis.
  • Under the supervision or guidance of the Director of the Division, the intern will work on research regarding the relevance of official statistics for democracy. Tasks include:
    • Assisting in data collection, validation, and cleaning processes.
    • Supporting preparation of external sector reports, including balance of payments, trade statistics, and national accounts.
    • Contributing to the maintenance and organization of statistical databases.
    • Collaborating with team members on special projects or ad-hoc tasks related to economic statistics.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
    • Enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship.
  • Applicants must be:
    • A student in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme, or
    • Have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme.
  • Specific requirement: Studying or have completed Commercial Engineering.
  • Must provide proof of academic enrollment or completion.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.
