Duties and Responsibilities

  • The UN Resident Coordinator leads the UN Country Team in China, including all UN entities present in the country.
  • The Resident Coordinators System (RCS) aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness of UN operational activities at the country level and strengthen partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The UN Resident Coordinators Office (RCO) supports the roles and functions of the UN Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team.
  • The RCO provides inter-agency coordination support to the UN Country Team (UNCT) and its working mechanisms, including theme groups.

Key functions of the RCO include:

  • Strategic analysis, planning, and positioning of the Country Team
  • Preparation and monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF)
  • Support for joint UN programming and operations management
  • Policy guidance
  • Joint advocacy and communications to enhance UN coherence
  • Improving overall programme impact of the UN System in China
  • The RCO China is looking for a motivated administrative/human resources intern to join the office full-time and support its mandate of enhancing UN system coherence in China.
  • The internship is UNPAID.
  • Minimum duration: two months, extendable up to six months.
  • Work schedule: five days per week (37.5 hours) under supervision of an assigned staff member.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level)
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship applied for.
  • Applicants must demonstrate:
    • Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter
    • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
  • Technical skills:
    • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams
    • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts (desirable)
    • Ability to design surveys and polls (desirable)

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Chinese is required.
  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.

Intern Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship.
