Duties and Responsibilities

Background

  • On 8 September 2022, the General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 76/306 to establish a UN Youth Office as a dedicated entity for youth affairs within the Secretariat.
  • The UN Youth Office leads the UN’s efforts on youth development, focusing on raising international awareness, promoting youth rights, and strengthening youth participation in development, peace and security, human rights, and humanitarian frameworks.

Responsibilities of the Intern
The intern is expected to work five days per week, full time (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, under the supervision of a staff member. Daily tasks will depend on the individual’s background, department, and internship period. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in tracking initiatives to strengthen systematic dialogue with government counterparts.
  • Support research, analysis, and presentation of information gathered from diverse sources, including Member States, United Nations Country Teams, entities, youth organizations, networks, and academia.
  • Support drafting of background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications related to youth affairs.
  • Provide support to consultative meetings, especially with the diplomatic community, including preparing documentation (agenda, participant lists, documents, presentations, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

Additional requirements:

  • No prior professional work experience required; however, the field of study must relate to the internship.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
  • Experience in youth engagement or youth-related processes is an asset.
  • Experience in intergovernmental affairs processes is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Intern Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
