Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) in the Department of Operational Support (DOS) identifies, preserves, and provides access to records documenting the history of the UN.
  • ARMS manages all aspects of recordkeeping within the UN Secretariat, from creation of records by officials to managing and preserving records of continuing value.
  • The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides end-to-end operational support, advisory services, and solutions to UN entities globally, including departments, offices-away-from-headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.
  • Internship is in the UN Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) of the Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) in the Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support.
  • ARMS operates as the archival repository of the UN Secretariat based in New York, providing a public research facility and advisory services to UN offices, missions, and staff worldwide.
  • Supports research community by making archives available online and provides remote and onsite training and advisory services.

Office Duties

  • Survey, process, and describe archival records
  • Assist with internal and external reference requests
  • Improve metadata descriptions
  • Conduct historical research
  • Assist in ARMS’ digitization programme
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher), or final academic year of a first university degree (minimum Bachelor’s), or have graduated with a relevant degree.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in an archive or library programme are preferred.
  • No prior work experience required; education, training, or skills should benefit the UN during the internship.
  • Include previous UN internship experience, if any, with entity and assignment dates.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements:
    • Interns in the USA who are not US citizens, permanent residents, or on another non-immigrant status (e.g., F1 or J1 visa) must obtain a G4 visa.
    • Selected candidates are responsible for ensuring they have a valid visa and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT) to undertake the internship
