The Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) in the Department of Operational Support (DOS) identifies, preserves, and provides access to records documenting the history of the UN.
ARMS manages all aspects of recordkeeping within the UN Secretariat, from creation and management of records to preserving and providing access to records of continuing value as archives.
The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides operational support, advisory services, and other solutions to UN entities, including departments, field missions, and regional commissions.
The internship in the United Nations Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) of the Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), DOS is for three months.
ARMS operates the archival repository at UN Headquarters in New York, providing public research facilities and advisory services to UN offices, missions, and staff worldwide.
ARMS aims to make as many archives available online as possible and provides remote and onsite training and advisory services.
Office Duties
Survey, process, and describe archival records.
Assist with internal and external reference requests.
Improve metadata descriptions.
Conduct historical research.
Assist in ARMS’ digitization programme.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher); or
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or
Have graduated with a university degree as defined above.
Candidates should be currently enrolled in an archive or library programme.

No prior work experience is required; education, training, or advanced coursework should benefit the United Nations during the internship.
Applicants who previously completed a UN internship should indicate the entity and assignment dates.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Visa and work authorization mandatory requirements:
For internships in the USA, persons who are not US citizens, permanent residents, or on another non-immigrant visa (F1, J1, etc.) must obtain a G4 visa.
The selected intern is responsible for securing a valid visa and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT).
