Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internship is full-time (five days per week, 40 hours) and unpaid.
  • Position located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at UNCTAD Regional Office for Africa, Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC).
  • Internship tentatively starts 5 November 2025 for three months.
  • For in-person internships: valid visa required; costs for travel, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses covered by intern.
  • For remote internships: must have computer with modern browser, Office 365 applications, and basic IT security practices.
  • Minimum IT requirements include:
    • Latest Microsoft Windows OS and updates installed.
    • Built-in software firewall enabled.
    • Password manager enabled for strong passwords and secure access to UNCTAD/UN resources.

Responsibilities under supervision of Chief of Regional Office and Economic Affairs Officer:

  • Assist in organizing dissemination activities for UNCTAD research.
  • Update social media platforms, run campaigns, produce short videos/animated clips and graphics, and grow audience base.
  • Draft news articles, update office databases, conduct internet research, and compile information related to UNCTAD’s work.
  • Develop communications products for target audiences: press releases, reports, brochures, flyers, briefing notes, newsletters, and web content.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the office’s communications strategy, including media outreach.
  • Prepare initial drafts of articles or chapters for UN newsletters, periodicals, reports, and books.
  • Identify key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to enhance communications efforts.
  • Organize conferences, seminars, press briefings, interviews, and other outreach events; prepare briefing materials for senior officials.

General Intern Responsibilities:

  • Observe all applicable UN rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives.
  • Provide the office with copies of all materials prepared; UN retains all property rights, including patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • Respect UN impartiality and independence; do not accept instructions from external authorities.
  • Do not communicate non-public information to media or external sources without authorization; no personal gain from UN information.
  • Refrain from conduct that adversely reflects on UN or the office; avoid activities incompatible with UN aims and objectives.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • At time of application, must meet one of:
    • Enrolled in or completed graduate program (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in or completed final year of first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level).
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications.
  • Keen interest in UN work and commitment to UN Charter ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • University degree in journalism, international relations, public administration, or related field.
  • Professional work experience is not required, but field of study must relate to the internship.

Languages

  • English and French are UN working languages.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English required; French is an advantage.

  • Assessment based on Personal History Profile (PHP); individual interviews may be conducted.
  • Complete online application required (Cover Note and PHP).
  • Cover Note should include:
    • Title of degree currently pursuing.
    • Graduation date.
    • IT skills and software proficiency.
    • Explanation of suitability for the internship.
  • PHP should include all past work experience, IT skills, and three references.
  • Only successful candidates will be contacted.
  • Internship does not guarantee employment within UN.
  • Interns ineligible to apply for professional-level UN positions for six months after internship.
  • Children, siblings, or closely related individuals of UN staff have eligibility restrictions.
