The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking to recruit for its Operations Directorate (OPS) - Financial Institutions Department (FID) - Advisory - Financial Institutions Division (5-AFI) - Climate and Urban Unit (CLIM&URB) at its headquarters in Luxembourg: TRAINEE

Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st March 2026)

(With possible extension up to 6 months if required by University)

Objective of the traineeship

The objective is to support the research and analysis activities of the Division in key strategic areas like Innovation & digitalisation and security & defence and contribute to the development of new advisory assignments with the European Commission, Member States and financial institutions.

The traineeship will allow you to learn more about financial instruments and EU Shared Management Funds as well as gain a better understanding of wider EU programmes and EIB intermediated financing initiatives. You will work closely with experts providing financial advisory support to EU Member States and financial institutions across a variety of topics, including climate action, sustainability and financing of smaller enterprises.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of Division and senior colleagues, you will actively participate in the Division9s core activities. Your main tasks will be:

  • Conducting desk research on national investment support programmes for SME/midcap innovation and digitalisation across EU Member States.
  • Analysing and comparing eligibility criteria with EIB Group standards.
  • Supporting research and analysis in the security and defence sector.
  • Preparing briefing notes, comparative reports, and presentations for internal use.
  • Assisting with other research and analytical tasks as required by the team.
  • Contribute to the drafting of internal documents for the initiation, implementation and reporting of advisory assignments.

Academic qualifications and professional skills

  • Final year of studies or University degree preferably in Economics, Finance, Banking, Business Administration or other related disciplines.
  • A first experience in banking or EU institutions will be considered as an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools (in particular Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and/or French. Knowledge of other EU language would be an advantage.
