The top employers based in Central and southern Africa
A look into the top global development organizations hiring in Central and southern Africa.
By Genevieve Gregorio // 18 July 2025Central Africa and southern Africa, two interconnected regions of the African continent, are characterized by geographical diversity, a rich culture, and a mixed economic landscape. In the midst of these, some countries in the region, notably the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DRC, and the Central African Republic, or CAR, are grappling with internal conflicts and political turmoil, leading to humanitarian challenges and significant instability that have impacted the lives of millions. These complexities emphasize the need for peace and humanitarian initiatives in the region. Despite USAID funding cuts that immensely affected development initiatives around the world, with only 12 USAID staffers reported to be assigned to the whole of Africa, it appears that Central and southern Africa have not seen a severe impact. Data from the Devex job board shows that since Jan. 24 this year, when the Trump administration first began its aid freeze, 218 jobs have been posted — a 14% decrease compared to the 252 jobs posted in the same period last year. While jobs in these regions are relatively smaller in number compared to other regions, the jobs record shows the presence of organizations in Central and southern Africa that are not funded by the U.S. government, particularly the special missions mandated by the United Nations and the European Union for DRC and CAR. Other organizations, such as the intergovernmental Southern African Development Community, or SADC, and the nonprofit Tiko, based in Botswana and South Africa, respectively, are also operating in the region with a few job opportunities in the past months.
